For profiles
Jeff Daley’s path began in St. Paul, Minnesota, and led him into military service during the Vietnam War. After specialized training with the U.S. Army 10th Special Forces in Bad Tölz, Germany, he served as a Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol operator in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. At twenty years old and eleven days in-country, he gave his first deep-reconnaissance report from memory. His work with small teams depended on discipline, preparation, and trust. Wounded and reported missing in action, Daley returned home in November 1966. He went on to build a long career with the Bell System, pursue his education through a doctorate, raise a family, and support fellow veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs. He began writing so his family would understand where he had walked and what those experiences meant. Walking in the Garden: A Memoir of Long-Range Reconnaissance in Vietnam combines memory with declassified records and after-action reports. His writing for younger readers draws on the remarkable partnership he shared with Marshall, a Belgian Malinois service dog who helped him regain independence. Across generations, Daley’s books explore courage, responsibility, loyalty, service, and the ties that endure.
